Chief Mayegun - Baba ObaFemi Chief Mayegun Obafemi Fayemi (aka Baba Femi) was born Stephen Mackey on December 30, 1957, the fifth of six children from Vivian and Fletcher Mackey. Baba Femi comes from a long line of educators on his maternal lineage, including his great grandfather who worked in education under President William Taft. His lineage goes back to both slavery and Native American (Choctaw) culture. Being raised in the 3rd Ward of Houston during the civil rights era (1957-1969), helped to shape and mold a conscious ideology of African American lifestyle and culture. After the passing of his father when he was two, his mother and grandmother kept him and his siblings close to the church. One poignant moment in Baba Femi’s path was at age 16. Upon returning from Chicago, a tumultuous summer of dogmatic life changing experiences with his uncle, a Southern Baptist Minister, he received a vision. A feminine angelic being, came to him, the first of many visits, and set the tone for a very unique spiritual journey. After graduating from high school, he had completed reading the Bible at the end of his freshman year in college, and then began reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X, a gift from his older brother. So began the fusion of spirituality. After completing college, he traveled Europe where he continued a successful basketball career in Finland and South America. In 1981 he began 24 years of working in industrial and corporate America along with marriage, family. Baba Femi is the father of four boys, Steve Jr., Sheldon, Corey, and Jordan. During this period, always the Bible student, he became a Sunday school teacher, and began to study the esoterical meaning of the word, which led him down many paths. One of the paths began to produce dissension within the church hierarchy. Although all of his Sunday morning classes were filled, it was unsettling for the Deacons. He was asked to leave the church in February of 1993. After many years of studying many religions and systems, he finally settled with Ifa “The Wisdom of Nature.” He met the late Oluwo Dr. Afolabi Adeyemi Epega a 5th generation High Priest in 2003 and was initiated by him in January of 2004. Baba Femi is now studying under the Araba of Ode Remo Adesanya Awoyade (who shares the lineage of Oluwo Epega) and the elders of Ode Remo. He was made Chief in January of 2009 and given the title; Chief Maiyegun “The one who speaks for Ifa in America on behalf of Ode Remo.” Now regularly traveling to Africa and abroad, he is established on both the east and west coasts as a spiritual counselor, lecturer and teacher. He recently authored a novel, Who is Sambo? A journey of Lessons, concerning the genesis of black self hatred. “Baba Femi” as many of his godchildren and clients refer to him, has helped show numerous individuals how the Divine Source speaks to them through signs, symbols and divination i.e., the Wisdom of Nature. He was given the title “OLORIOKO” which means Head of the Family by Olojumoke Epega, the wife of Dr. Epega and by the elders of the Gaga community in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Baba Femi is currently the head of The Obafemifayemi Institute for the Study of Ifa (OISI) where its mission is to help those who seek to develop the awareness of self and purpose. Baba Femi celebrated his 100th godchild on Father’s day 2010. His goal and objective is to continue fulfilling his Odu (pattern/contract of destiny) with his godchildren, clients and open minded individuals from California to New York; from Seattle to Florida and Worldwide.
